Far from Ordinary

Boots, Carpets, Towels, Rugs, Garments

Tasmanian manufacturers are thriving in niche sectors of the Textile Clothing and Footwear (TCF) sector against a background of structural change. One of the State’s earliest and best-known TCF businesses, Blundstone Boots, a household name dating back to the 1840s, produces 200,000 pairs of gumboots a year at its Hobart plant.

Waverley Australia buys wool locally and scours it at its Launceston factory for the production of luxury rugs, blankets and other items.

Casaveen, a midlands producer of high-quality woollen garments, epitomises the corporate agility needed to survive in challenging times. With their long-standing wool-production business under pressure towards the end of last century through drought and falling demand for wool, the McShane family turned a value-adding hobby into a highly successful business. Along with the Tasmanian Wool Centre at Ross, their Oatlands mill and restaurant have become a new type of tourist attraction.
